The U.S. goods-and-services deficit widened to $105.6 billion in August, the Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis said in their October 6 release. The figure was $12.7 billion higher than July’s revised $92.8 billion deficit.

Imports rose more than exports

BEA’s August trade release reported exports of $315.2 billion, up $4.5 billion from July, and imports of $420.8 billion, up $17.2 billion. The release said the goods deficit increased $12.8 billion to $136.6 billion, while the services surplus rose by less than $0.1 billion to $31.0 billion.

How to read the figures

The headline data are seasonally adjusted but not adjusted for price changes, and are on a balance-of-payments basis unless otherwise specified. They describe the value of recorded trade, not inflation-adjusted trade volumes or a single cause of the monthly movement. BEA lists its next release, covering September, for November 4.
